  • Half way though September and…

    What a year so far!

Back into fulltime work since April, which I’m loving. It’s a great company, has had some rapid growth but still is very much living its values. So, I shall share a link – go buy internet or a phone plan through them – https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/

Been super busy since the beginning of the year cleaning up Mum’s house, helping Kat move temporarily and then have the house sold. Settlement is expected 16 October so at least one more garage sale and then packing it all up. Will be a busy Grand Final weekend 🙂 – Australian Rules Football (of interest but not mad about it😂 )

    So, what’s the update?

Music believe it or not. It’s music week at my house. I’ve always had likes beyond the mainstream, previewed new releases and know if it was going to be a hit, or just had some eclectic or oddball musical tastes.

I also have a turntable and amp and have been tempted to play them. Thought the turntable needed a new belt but hasn’t resolved it’s spinning but not playing issue. May have to get a new /2nd hand turntable – currently the AT LP60X is in my sights.

Having said that most of what I’m loving this week has been around for a while.

So I look at TikTok, can lose hours on it really. But this watching this guy line dance to Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers” made me like the song and think about line dancing – they have a line dancing group in Bacchus Marsh, I looked.

This one is also all over TikTok with loads of people imitating the dance routines. The track is awesome, so cool and funky and very 70s feel. Makes me wanna dance too – (I do that sometimes on Saturday morning when the partner sleeps in 🤣🕺🪩💃)

Finally I discovered a women named Jackie Venson. Se’s an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has the most amazing facial expressions too. Find her on Spotify too

Finally I subscribe to the Songletter substack and the guys shared this older track a few weeks ago. Love it! Makes me feel happy and at ease.

yes, sometimes I have no idea where the music in my hard come from. I know I also hear music in my dreams!

  • My Gear – The things I carry when we go bush to photograph / birds

I buy a lot of stuff on eBay, occasionally Amazon, as sometimes I can find things a little cheaper there. I also trusted that PayPal and eBay supported me as a buyer.

So, I had a Nikon P900, thought I needed to upgrade and it was the ability to easily switch from bird mode to moon mode that convinced me. The P900 did have a little crack on the lens from when I knocked it once, but it did still work adequately, and my friend was willing to purchase the camera knowing that.

Nikon P1000 – picked this up on eBay in used condition – sent from Perth WA, paid about 30% less than retail at the time.

We have a monopod and tripod – rarely used – in fact only realised that they weren’t in the car the other day.

    What I wear

    • Hiking trousers
    • Hiking Boots
    • Polo shirt
    • Cap (or full brim depending on the weather)
    • Rain jacket
Shoulder holster – didn’t like the neck straps, tried a couple, so thought I would try this and loved it – eBay purchase https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/133109975077
Protective cover – watched a few P1000 videos on YouTube – knew that camera wasn’t waterproof due to extending lens (had to get the P900 serviced as it became noisy after being caught in some rain) – was using soft plastic vegie bags for a while with a rubber band until I came across these – now one in my bag and one in the car. Bought on Amazon   https://www.amazon.com.au/Ruggard-RC-P18-Rain-Cover-DSLR/dp/B00G4L9I8E/
Waist/bum bag – used mostly in summer and on shorter walks. A backpack often left me hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable. I fit most of what I need in it. See below for what’s in my bag.   Bought on eBay – be mindful of strap sizes, I have a larger waist so 1st one didn’t fir around me, but I gave that to my friend. Bough on eBay. This link is not the one I bought as the seller doesn’t seem to be selling them at the moment.   https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3854729625520

I have 3 spare batteries that I carry in a little black bag that I could put in my pocket if I need to. Plus, a spare SD card and a spare car key.

    Large Pocket

    • Rain cover
    • A gaiter (face shield for windy/dusty conditions
    • Bushman’s (dang flies)
    • Snacks
    • Sunglasses fit in here
    • Still has a little bit of room (maybe car keys)

    Front zip

    • Mobile phone

    Left Front pocket

    • Sunscreen
    • Stingose
    • Small duct tape (shoe repairs, camera repairs, clothes repairs, first aid)

    Right front pocket

I’ve been watching a few survival videos and things and stumbled across EDC (everyday carry) – what would you have on you to survive if there was a sudden emergency.

So I have added a few little bits and pieces that were inspired by that.

    • Pocket knife
    • Torch
    • Lighter
    • Cotton buds
    • Band-aids
    • Small zip ties
    • And I got the paracord band free somewhere.
    • Plus, some pain relief in a little blue screw-top container.

What kind of things do you carry?

  • These sessions currently start at midnight AEDST Melbourne time so my plan is not to always attend live but to catch up on the videos, chat and Miro boards that form part of each session.

The team at KMGN also set up Otter.ai as a way to record the sessions as text. What a great selection of tools we have now to help with the understanding of content, especially useful in a culturally and geographically diverse group of participants with a lot of different first languages.

The 1st session was about laying the foundation of the course underpinned by the question:

How to build, implement and scale collaboration in our new world with high speed and great results?

    Key Takeaways via Zoom chat

    • Participants excited about brushing up and finding new collaboration tools
    • “Inclusion” comes to my mind when thinking of a future collaboration.
    • It could become increasingly difficult to build trust in fully virtual environment, especially for certain generations more used to face-to-face interaction
    • How to reduce the conflict and make collaboration more effective in the whole process? When some people with different interests being together, these include more challenges
    • Trust is a key foundation for effective collaboration
    • Inclusive and new approach to community
    • Crisis helps fastens the pace of collaboration

  • Lyn Update – August 2022

Phew, it’s been a busy couple of weeks since I posted my July update. So much going on, so much learning, so many things I have found of interest to me that I want to share with you. So here goes…

    Work

I am not working at the moment but have started looking at what is available in the world. I have had a bit of ‘corporate fatigue’ after my last role. Again the work was really important and purposeful but OMG the bureaucracy was crazy so am very much considering a ‘seachange’ and thinking Bunnings retail or similar (will try the local hardware too). Every time I mention it to my friends, every single one of them say it’s the perfect role for me. Yes I can do customer service (and have done so) plus I do DIY and I did do a couple of related courses (3-month pre-apprenticeship course fitting and turning, basic woodworking and upholstery)

I’m also considering a horticulture course, and did enquire before the last semester started, but they were either too expensive, or were back to face-to-face teaching and not my preferred option.

I’ve also had contact from a couple of my peers (one an ex RMIT student) asking for some guidance and about possible short term opportunities. Short term I like the sound of and I am always happy to chat to help kick off a KM project. I might have to share a seperate post about that.

    Home

We have a family of magpies who come visit most days, They steal the dog kibble as well as the bird food we put out. Tash asked if I knew if they were make or female and I really had no idea but then I saw a Magpie Whisperer post about it.

    The Hundred

Now I’m watching “The Hundred“, usually the next day as it is based in England and so its often on at midnight. Thankfully many of the best international players, inlcuding Australians, have been recruited to play in The Hundred. It’s nice to see Ellyse Perry get a few great innings in, as well as Elyse Villani. Plus I’ve been watching Amanda-Jade Wellington’s YouTube vlogs about both the Comm Games and now The Hundred and they are great insights into a cricket sporting professional’s daily activities and duties.

What is The Hundred you ask?

The Hundred is a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament involving eight men’s and eight women’s teams located in major cities across England and Wales (wikipedia)

One-hundred-ball cricket is a form of limited overs cricket, played by two teams each playing a single innings made up of 100 balls.[15] Games last approximately two and a half hours.[16]

The format of the game is:

    • 100 balls per innings[17]
    • A change of ends after 10 balls[17]
    • Bowlers deliver either five or 10 consecutive balls[17]
    • Each bowler can deliver a maximum of 20 balls per game[17]
    • Each bowling side gets a strategic time-out of up to two and a half minutes[17]
    • A 25-ball powerplay start for each team[17]
    • Two fielders are allowed outside the initial 30-yard circle during the powerplay[17]
    • Teams will be able to call time-outs, as has been the case in the IPL since 2009[18]
    • The non-striker must return to their original end after a caught dismissal[19]
    • No-balls are worth two runs and a free hit[19]
    • Slow over-rates are penalised by one fewer fielder being permitted outside the ring for the final over.[20]

  • Lyn Update – July 2022

Keeping busy whilst not working and have not really been looking for work but that journey is now starting. I have applied for a retail role.

    What have I been doing?

a photo of the motherdaughter rose flower - it's a yellow rose not quite at full bloom with some darker tinges on the edge of the petals
    the motherdaughter rose

Garden – pruned the roses except for the last 2 buds on the motherdaughter rose.

Plus I have been preparing the veggie boxes for the next lots of growth as well as clearing up some ground cover to add in another box.

I’ve also been looking at ways to extend the deck so that where there is a slight incline that becomes muddy and the dogs run through are no longer there.

What have I been listening to

“A playlist celebrating the music of The xx and its roots and branches – including those they’ve been influenced and inspired by.”

The list includes some of my faves from the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s. And frankly, anything that includes Prince.

I first heard ‘The xx” at the Atrium Bar on 35 (bar on the 35th floor of the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins in 2011 – celebrating Tash’s birthday in style. Didn’t know what I was listening to but loved it. Thank goodness Shazam had been created and I could find out who this awesome band were.

    What am I reading?

Saw a tweet from inc.com about “A Neuroscientist Recommends 5 Books to Help You Get Unstuck at Work – I already own 3 of those 5 books so I better get reading 🙂

    What am I watching?

I don’t watch a lot of TV these days, despite having many of the subscriptions.

I’ve watched 1 episode of “My Name” on Netflix and look forward to watching more – https://www.netflix.com/au/title/81011211

I’ve watched 2 episodes of “Resident Evil” on Netflix and will watch more – https://www.netflix.com/au/title/80996532

But mostly I have been watching Women’s cricket – much of it late into the evening and early morning. I am so excited for the Commonwealth Games starting Fri 28 July to watch more cricket too. To that end – I have started a Discord server called All things Women’s Cricket which you are welcome to join. A woman I met on another discord server loves commentating the games so we started the server for her to continue to do that. • Tabs, lots of tabs
screenshot displaying a number of different browser tabs
    all of the tabs

    originally posted 09 Feb 2022

After every newsletter, meetup event, or webinar, I end up with a dozen or more tabs open of content I want to review later.

I then add them to a “read this” folder in my bookmarks/favourites.

I’ve tried to organise them better using bookmark tools, but I still find I have many to catch up on. I’ve decided to give each page/bookmark a small review and then restructure or remove the bookmark from the “read this” list. I should have the time whilst I am looking for the next gig and participating in a couple of training activities, shouldn’t I?
